Westergate is twenty minutes from our Bognor Regis workshop, out past Aldingbourne where the villages run together — Eastergate next door, Fontwell and its racecourse just up the road, Oving over toward Chichester. It's a settlement built largely in the mid-century boom: chalet-style bungalows and detached houses from the 1960s and 70s, a good number of which still have their original mosaic-block parquet hiding under decades of carpet.
That parquet is what a lot of our Westergate work turns on. The flagship job on this page was exactly that — a tired 1960s block floor gone orange and scarred under old lacquer, lifted where it had failed, repaired, sanded right back to bare timber and refinished to a natural warm oak. But it's not all restoration: in the larger detached homes we lay new hardwood, new parquet and new herringbone from scratch, so the village keeps a steady mix of saving old floors and laying new ones.
Westergate and Eastergate are full of mid-century housing, and a surprising amount of it still sits on its original mosaic-block parquet — those little basket-weave squares that went down across the 1960s and 70s. Left under carpet for decades it goes dark and scarred, the old lacquer turning a hard orange, but the timber underneath is almost always worth saving. We lift and repair the failed blocks, relay salvaged ones into the original pattern, then sand the whole floor back and refinish it to an even, natural tone. It keeps the floor that came with the house rather than skipping it into a builder's bag.
In the bigger detached homes it's just as often new work — new hardwood, new parquet and new herringbone laid from scratch. Whether it's a fresh block floor to echo the ones the area was built with, or wide engineered oak through an extension, we set it out properly and finish it by hand.
Either way we survey the subfloor before quoting: mid-century concrete slabs and suspended timber both throw up their own quirks, and we'd rather find them at the survey than halfway through laying a floor.
