Pulborough and Storrington sit on opposite shoulders of the Arun valley — forty minutes north of the Bognor workshop up the A29, twinned by the A283 corridor that threads along the foot of the South Downs scarp, and bracketed by some of the loveliest postcodes in West Sussex. Pulborough climbs north from the river up to St Mary’s on Church Hill, with Edwardian villas lining the approach down Lower Street, Georgian and Victorian townhouses sitting back from the road, and the RSPB water-meadows reserve stretching out toward the Arun. Storrington is the older of the two by feel — a proper mediaeval market town with weatherboard cottages threading the High Street and Church Street, Edwardian villas climbing Old Mill Drive, and Storrington Priory tucked behind walled gardens off North Street. We’ve lifted original elm and pine board in the timber-framed cottages off Storrington High Street, hand-buffed Edwardian parquet back through the larger villas on Church Hill in Pulborough, and laid wide-plank oak through the bigger Downs-edge houses out toward Sullington Lane.
Further out the work shifts toward farmhouse and estate-cottage jobs in proper Parham and Wiston country — herringbone re-laid through open-plan flint-and-brick kitchen-diners in Cootham and Sullington, walnut feature rooms in former dairy buildings out by West Chiltington and Amberley, and brushed engineered oak through long flagstone hallways in the brick-and-tile cottages around Coldwaltham and Wisborough Green. The drive up the A29 hands you the South Downs scarp on the right and the Arun water meadows on the left, the Square in Storrington on a Saturday is worth catching for the village-bakery queue alone, and the standard never changes — same hand, same patience, same respect for the building you’re working in.

The mediaeval and Tudor stock around Storrington High Street, Church Street and the older lanes off the Square typically has thin, irregular original elm or pine boards over hand-cut joists with very little void clearance, and we always survey by lifting a discreet board before quoting; we lean toward gentle gap-filling with traditional slivers and a satin hardwax-oil finish so the floor reads as original to anyone who isn’t looking at it with a torch.

For the bigger Parham-estate and Downs-edge farmhouses out toward Sullington, Cootham, West Chiltington and Amberley we lean toward engineered cores — stable enough not to need acclimatising — run a moisture-meter pass over every subfloor (underfloor heating and inglenook hearths included), acclimatise the boards on-site first where we’re laying solid wood, and bring sample boards in oak, walnut and reclaimed pine so the species can be matched to the room before a single block is cut.
