Felpham is home. Our workshop sits on the western side of the village, in PO22 7, so when we say we know the floors around here we mean it literally — we live and work among them. From the period cottages and detached houses around Felpham Village and Limmer Lane to the private apartments and beachfront homes over on the Summerley Estate, a good deal of our work never travels more than a few minutes from the bench.
It's the kind of village where the work comes by word of mouth — one job on a street tends to lead to the next. We've restored original parquet and herringbone in period homes, brought a wide-plank walnut floor back to life right through a large detached house in the village, supplied and laid new engineered and solid floors in the bigger detached and beachfront houses out toward Aldwick Bay and the Craigwell estate, and taken on commercial work too, including a full restoration at The Thatched House pub in the village. Homes, shops and the local — the same standard on all of them.
Felpham runs from period village cottages to newer detached houses and beachfront apartments, so no two jobs here are quite alike. In the older homes it's mostly restoration and parquet refurbishment — lifting and repairing tired herringbone and block floors, matching in replacement timber, then sanding the whole floor back and re-finishing it so old and new blend into one.
In the newer houses toward Aldwick and the Summerley estate it leans more to supply and installation — new engineered herringbone and solid wood laid over a properly prepared subfloor. With so much of the village a stone's throw from the sea, we always check the subfloor for damp and movement before we quote, so nothing lifts or cups a season down the line.
Plenty of the bigger detached houses here already have a good-quality plank floor that just looks tired — walnut and oak that has gone patchy and grey where the finish has worn through. That’s a sand-and-refinish job, not a replacement: we take the old finish back to clean timber and put on a fresh hardwearing coat, so the grain and colour come up like new.
We take on commercial and period parquet work too — the village shop floor we brought back from a blackened, worn old block floor, and the herringbone restoration at The Thatched House pub. And we stand behind every floor we lay. As Mike Livingstaone told us, “When we damaged a board I can confirm that their after care service has also been spectacular.”
A few of the floors we’ve laid and restored around the village lately — a wide-plank walnut floor sanded back and refinished through a detached family home, a period herringbone in a Felpham home, a shop floor brought back from bare block, and the wood-block restoration at The Thatched House pub. A large detached house in the village with a wide-plank walnut floor that had worn patchy and dull. Here it’s mid-job in the hallway — the drum sander halfway across, so you can see the freshly cut bare walnut sitting against the old, darker finish we’re taking off.
The finished floor, running from the hall right through the open-plan living space to the French doors onto the garden. Sanded back and refinished to a rich satin, so the deep chocolate colour and pale sapwood streaks in each wide board come up clean again.
The same restored walnut carried through the open-plan kitchen and dining end, under the square pillars and out to the front bay window. One continuous floor across the whole ground floor, with the finish even from the kitchen island to the far wall.
Looking back past the granite-topped kitchen peninsula towards the hall and staircase. The refinished walnut runs neatly round the units and through the doorway, with the boards’ bold grain and knots showing through the fresh satin coat.

Where that shop floor started — original herringbone blocks gone black and worn at the doorway, the old finish long since walked off and bitumen staining showing through decades of use. A characterful floor well worth saving rather than tearing out.
The old floor coverings lifted to uncover an original herringbone block floor running the length of the room — still black with decades of bitumen and grime, but structurally sound underneath. This is where a restoration really begins: reading the floor, working out which blocks are keepers and which need cutting in, before a single pass of the sander.
The restored herringbone brought right up to the shop’s glazed doors — freshly sanded, pale and tight, with the border blocks cut neatly around the entrance matwell. The point where a worn-out floor turns back into a welcome.
The Thatched House in the village, cleared back to bare subfloor and fresh screed with the tools still out — the starting point for a full wood-block restoration in the bar. Darren was recommended to the new owner by a local, and the rich herringbone in the hero shot above is where it ended up.
