70 minutes from our Bognor Regis workshop · Covering GU8
Chiddingfold sits on the A283 between Petworth and Godalming, deep in the Surrey Weald and roughly seventy minutes up from our Bognor Regis workshop. It's at the far end of our one-and-a-half-hour patch, but we’ve picked up enough Surrey work over the years — Haslemere, Liphook, Dunsfold and Chiddingfold itself — that the run is a familiar one and the drive doesn’t change the price.
The village has one of the largest greens in southern England, ringed by timber-framed and tile-hung cottages, the 12th-century St Mary’s on its rise and the Crown Inn opposite. Most of what we get called to here is restoration on that older stock — lifting and sympathetically refinishing original boards in cottages around the green and along Petworth Road — and installation work in the converted farm buildings and larger period houses out toward Pockford, Frillinghurst and Combe Common.
Chiddingfold’s older cottages around the green sit on hand-cut joists with limited void clearance, and a fair number of them are timber-framed under the render — we survey by lifting a discreet board before quoting so we’re not guessing what’s underneath.
Where the original elm, oak or pine boards are still in usable condition we lean toward gentle gap-filling with traditional slivers and a satin hardwax-oil finish; the floor reads as original to anyone who isn’t looking with a torch, and it ages with the building.
For the converted farm buildings and modern extensions out along the lanes north and south of the village we run a moisture-meter pass over every subfloor (underfloor heating and inglenook hearths included), acclimatise solid boards on-site first, and bring sample boards in oak, walnut and reclaimed pine so the species can be matched to the room before any of it goes down.
The timber-framed cottages ringing the green and the farm conversions out toward Combe Common ask for patient, traditional work — that's what we've done across Chiddingfold and GU8 since 1997.

Read moreOur work in Chiddingfold is anchored by the GU8 postcode — Timber-framed & tile-hung cottages ringing the village green all sit squarely inside it. Around 70 minutes up from the Bognor Regis workshop — same craftsman every visit, flat-rate quotes by the job not the mile.
Across GU8 the Chiddingfold brief stays the same: Darren surveys on-site, sample boards stay with you for a fortnight under your own lighting, and the install runs in a single solid stretch rather than back-and-forth day trips. It matters in places like Converted farm buildings & period houses out toward Pockford and Combe Common where the subfloors and the building fabric earn a slower pass. Family team since 1997, working across Surrey from the same coastal base.
Every wood flooring pattern, character finish and construction Darren installs — solid hardwood, engineered oak, herringbone and parquet — laid out edge-to-edge so you can see real grain, real colour, real texture.
Darren will visit, measure up and walk you through species, finishes and lead times. No pressure, no hard sell — just specialist advice.
