About floors in Liphook

Hardwood floors installed in Liphook.

Liphook sits right on the East Hampshire / West Sussex border, forty-five minutes north up the A3 from the Bognor workshop, and it’s a part of the patch that genuinely rewards the drive. The old village around the Square and Bramshott has timber-frame and Georgian bones — the Royal Anchor coaching inn predates the railway by a couple of centuries — and then the Portsmouth Direct line arriving in 1859 brought a wave of Edwardian commuter villas out along Headley Road, Portsmouth Road and London Road that are still the spine of the town’s period stock today. We’ve lifted plenty of original pine and oak board in those villas, hand-buffed parquet back from forty years of neglect, and laid wide-plank oak in the bigger Edwardian and Arts & Crafts properties up around Highfield Lane.

Further out toward Hollycombe, Bramshott Common and the lanes running down to Liss the work shifts toward larger jobs in larger houses — herringbone re-laid across open-plan kitchen-diners, walnut feature rooms, and brushed engineered oak through long heathland-house hallways. The drive up is honest, the sandy commons and the National Trust country around Ludshott are worth the trip on their own, and the standard never changes — same hand, same patience, same respect for the building you’re working in.

Why Liphook is different

Edwardian railway villas need a patient hand.

Liphook sits up on the East Hampshire greensand, three hundred feet above the coast, with the sandy heaths and pine woods of Ludshott and Bramshott Common pressing in on three sides — and the houses up here have a different rhythm to plan around than the coastal towns. The humidity swing is inland: drier winters, woodburners and Aga-warmed kitchens going hard from October through April, then a green damp comes off the heath in late summer — and that brings its own subfloor questions, especially in the older Edwardian stock with original suspended timber voids.

We always survey the void on Edwardian and Victorian properties around the Square, Headley Road and Portsmouth Road before lifting boards, and we lean toward hardwax oil finishes on period work — they age in step with the building and spot-repair cleanly when a fire-iron skitters across the hearth.

For new installs in the bigger Hollycombe and Highfield Lane houses we lean toward engineered cores — stable enough not to need acclimatising — run a moisture-meter pass over every subfloor (underfloor heating included), and where we’re laying solid wood we acclimatise the boards on-site first. We’ll bring sample boards in oak, walnut and reclaimed pine so the species can be matched to the room before a single block is cut.

The kind of floors we install across Liphook.

We lay and restore hardwood, engineered and parquet floors throughout Liphook and the surrounding GU30 villages — wide-plank oak for an Edwardian villa, pale herringbone for a Bramshott bedroom. A sample of what we'd bring to your home.

Golden oak hallway boards

The kind of hall floor we’d lay in a Liphook home — golden-honey oak boards run the length of the entrance toward the stairs, smooth grain with the odd knot left in, finished in a soft satin oil that warms the whole passage.

Herringbone parquet, before restoration

Where a restoration starts — original oak herringbone parquet, grimy and patchy under a tired old finish and decades of dust. The kind of period floor we’d lift, clean and take back in a Liphook home before bringing the colour and a fresh satin sheen back to the blocks.

Original boards, stripped back

Where a restoration starts — original softwood boards stripped of carpet and left blackened and paint-flecked, ready for repair and sanding. The kind of tired period floor we’d take right back to bare timber in a Liphook home before bringing the colour and sheen back.

Honey oak boards, hall and stair

The kind of floor we’d lay in a Liphook home — honey-gold oak boards run through a hall and stair return, framed with a fine dark border inlay and finished in a soft satin oil that ties the entrance and the foot of the stairs together.

Where we cover & around Liphook

The GU30 · GU35 patch in detail.

Our work in Liphook is anchored by the GU30 postcode — Edwardian commuter villas around Headley Road & London Road all sit squarely inside it, with regular jobs reaching out into the neighbouring GU35 where The Square, Bramshott old village & Royal Anchor properties keep us busy. Around 45 minutes up from the Bognor Regis workshop — same craftsman every visit, flat-rate quotes by the job not the mile.

Whether the address reads GU30 or GU35, the Liphook brief is the same: Darren surveys on-site, sample boards stay with you for a fortnight under your own lighting, and the install runs in a single solid stretch rather than back-and-forth day trips. It matters in places like Heathland houses near Hollycombe, Ludshott & Bramshott Common where the subfloors and the building fabric earn a slower pass. Family team since 1997, working across Hampshire from the same coastal base. Around 7.5k residents in the town centre, and we’ve quoted on hundreds of the homes within walking distance of it.

“Darren and his team have just done a superb job for us. Our oak floor was in poor condition due to heavy use and now looks like new. In addition they did wonderful work on our kitchen table and chairs which were made by Amish workers in the US and had an amazing surface which lasted 20 years but needed replacing. Again they look like new. This is of course dusty work but the team did a great job of limiting this and left the house as they had found it, with all the furniture back in place and even pictures back on the walls. We also used Darren and his team 10 years ago in our last house where they laid a big oak floor. The quality of their work was excellent then and has been again this time. Darren is incredibly knowledgeable about wood flooring and guided us so well on what to do. He was a pleasure to deal with from beginning to end. We are delighted and can’t thank him enough for the work done.”

Frequently asked

What Liphook homeowners ask us.

Is forty-five minutes from the coast really workable for a Liphook project?
Yes — we run up to Liphook, Bramshott and Hollycombe regularly and it’s been part of our patch for years. Darren handles the survey personally so you get a single point of contact end-to-end, and we plan installs in solid stretches rather than back-and-forth day trips. The travel doesn’t change the price — quotes are flat-rate by the job, not by the mile.
Can you restore original pine or oak boards in an Edwardian villa?
It’s a big slice of our Liphook work — original pine and oak board lifted, gap-filled with traditional slivers and re-laid true in the Edwardian villas off Headley Road, Portsmouth Road and London Road. We hand-finish in satin hardwax oil, which suits the period architecture and ages naturally with the building. Darren brings restoration samples to every survey so you can see what’s achievable before committing.
Will woodburners, Agas and underfloor heating cause problems for a new install?
Not if the install is planned around them. We lean toward engineered cores within reach of a woodburner or Aga — they take heat cycling better than solid boards and don’t need acclimatising — run moisture readings across the whole subfloor including under any UFH circuits, and where we’re laying solid wood we acclimatise the boards on-site first. We’ll talk through the specifics for your room at the free survey.
