Rustington sits half an hour along the coast from our Bognor Regis workshop, between Littlehampton and East Preston, and a lot of its homes face straight out to sea. The apartment blocks along the seafront went up with the solid wood floors of their day — mosaic and block parquet that is still sound underneath decades of wear, and that almost always deserves sanding and refinishing rather than ripping out.
Back from the front it’s private houses — bungalows, family homes and larger detached properties running toward East Preston, Angmering and Ferring, and on along the coast to Goring-by-Sea. Some want an old floor restored; others want something new laid: engineered boards, herringbone, parquet, wide plank or a cleaner, contemporary look. We do all of it, and we give every floor the same care.
A lot of the parquet in Rustington’s seafront flats is mosaic parquet — small hardwood fingers set in basket-weave squares, often under a dark, tired lacquer that has gone orange and patchy. It sands beautifully if you do it right: we work the whole floor evenly so each square comes back to a level, clean finish without cutting through the thin fingers, then refill any loose or missing pieces before finishing.
Big south-facing windows are lovely to live with but hard on a floor. Strong sun bleaches and dries out timber, and salt air gets into everything, so we lean toward hardwearing, UV-stable finishes near the front and always check the subfloor for damp and movement before quoting.
In the houses further inland, the work is more often supply and installation: engineered boards that cope well with underfloor heating, herringbone and parquet for a hallway or kitchen, or wide plank for a contemporary open-plan room. Whatever we do, you’re left with full care instructions so the floor keeps looking its best.
One of our recent Rustington jobs: a seafront flat with its original mosaic parquet running through the lounge and kitchen. We sanded the old dark finish away and refinished the whole floor, so the warm colour of every hardwood square comes through again.

The same parquet carried into the kitchen, mid-job. Around the island the old dark, glossy finish is still on, while at the edges you can see where the sander has already cut back to paler bare timber, a clear before-and-after on one floor.
The kitchen once the sanding and finishing were done. The old dark lacquer has gone and the parquet now has an even, natural warm tone right round the island and up to the tiled utility threshold, with every finger laid tight and flat.
