About floors in Dial Post

Hardwood floors installed across Dial Post.

Dial Post is fifty minutes north of our Bognor workshop — an easy run east along the A27 and then straight up the A24 toward Horsham. The hamlet itself is small: a tight cluster of brick-and-tile cottages around the Crown on the old coaching road, then a scatter of period farmhouses, lodge cottages and converted Wealden barns stretching out into the lanes that thread south toward West Grinstead church and east into the Knepp Estate.

The work that lands here splits cleanly. The older village stock around the hamlet itself — mostly 18th- and 19th-century brick-and-tile cottages with original softwood pine over shallow joists — tends to be sympathetic restoration, gap-filled and re-finished. The bigger jobs sit further out on the lanes, in the converted farm buildings and lodge houses around West Grinstead, Shipley and the Knepp boundary, where we're more often laying engineered oak over underfloor heating or hand-fitting wide reclaimed boards into a barn conversion.

Why Dial Post is different

Two kinds of floor, one careful standard.

Two patterns repeat in Dial Post and shape how we quote. The hamlet's older cottages along the A24 mostly carry original softwood pine over shallow joists with limited void clearance — gentle hand-buffed restoration with traditional slivered gap-fill and a satin hardwax oil reads truer than aggressive machine-sanding on stock that age.

Out on the lanes, the converted farm buildings and barn conversions toward West Grinstead and the Knepp boundary are a different brief: deeper subfloors, often a concrete screed with underfloor heating, where engineered oak cores stay stable and reclaimed wide boards can be laid as a feature once they've acclimatised on site for a week to ten days.

The Adur catchment runs damp by South Downs standards, so we put a moisture meter over every subfloor before quoting and bring sample boards in oak, walnut and reclaimed pine so the species can be matched to the room before a single board is fixed.

Where we cover & around Dial Post

The RH13 patch in detail.

Our work in Dial Post is anchored by the RH13 postcode — Brick-and-tile cottages clustered around the Crown on the A24 all sit squarely inside it. Around 50 minutes up from the Bognor Regis workshop — same craftsman every visit, flat-rate quotes by the job not the mile.

Across RH13 the Dial Post brief stays the same: Darren surveys on-site, sample boards stay with you for a fortnight under your own lighting, and the install runs in a single solid stretch rather than back-and-forth day trips. It matters in places like Period stock running south into West Grinstead and east toward Shipley where the subfloors and the building fabric earn a slower pass. Family team since 1997, working across West Sussex from the same coastal base.

Frequently asked

What Dial Post homeowners ask.

Is 50 minutes from the coast really workable for a Dial Post project?
Yes — the A27 east to Worthing, then the A24 north past Findon is a steady straight run and Dial Post sits firmly inside our 1.5-hour service radius. Darren handles the survey personally, and we plan installs in solid stretches rather than back-and-forth day trips. The travel doesn't change the price — quotes are flat-rate by the job, not by the mile.
Can you sand and restore the original pine boards in the older cottages along the A24?
Absolutely — the brick-and-tile cottages around the Crown and the lodge cottages on the lanes mostly carry original softwood pine over shallow joists, and that's one of the more rewarding briefs in our patch. We hand-buff rather than aggressively machine-sand on stock that age, gap-fill with traditional matched slivers, and finish in a satin hardwax oil so the floor stays breathable. Darren brings sample finishes to every survey.
Do you fit engineered oak in the converted barns and farmhouses toward Knepp and West Grinstead?
Often — the converted Wealden farm buildings on the lanes south and east of the hamlet typically sit on a concrete screed, frequently with underfloor heating, and an engineered oak core is the right answer there: stable, quiet underfoot, no movement to worry about. We use Bona finishes, Osmo hardwax oils and Wakol or Lecol adhesives as standard, and we'll dry-lay the boards for your eye before a single one is fixed.
Will you visit before quoting?
Always — a free survey in Dial Post is a 30–40 minute visit, Darren brings sample boards, checks the subfloor with a moisture meter, and walks you through finishes. A written quote follows within 72 hours.
