50 minutes from our Bognor Regis workshop · Covering RH13
Dial Post is fifty minutes north of our Bognor workshop — an easy run east along the A27 and then straight up the A24 toward Horsham. The hamlet itself is small: a tight cluster of brick-and-tile cottages around the Crown on the old coaching road, then a scatter of period farmhouses, lodge cottages and converted Wealden barns stretching out into the lanes that thread south toward West Grinstead church and east into the Knepp Estate.
The work that lands here splits cleanly. The older village stock around the hamlet itself — mostly 18th- and 19th-century brick-and-tile cottages with original softwood pine over shallow joists — tends to be sympathetic restoration, gap-filled and re-finished. The bigger jobs sit further out on the lanes, in the converted farm buildings and lodge houses around West Grinstead, Shipley and the Knepp boundary, where we're more often laying engineered oak over underfloor heating or hand-fitting wide reclaimed boards into a barn conversion.
Two patterns repeat in Dial Post and shape how we quote. The hamlet's older cottages along the A24 mostly carry original softwood pine over shallow joists with limited void clearance — gentle hand-buffed restoration with traditional slivered gap-fill and a satin hardwax oil reads truer than aggressive machine-sanding on stock that age.
Out on the lanes, the converted farm buildings and barn conversions toward West Grinstead and the Knepp boundary are a different brief: deeper subfloors, often a concrete screed with underfloor heating, where engineered oak cores stay stable and reclaimed wide boards can be laid as a feature once they've acclimatised on site for a week to ten days.
The Adur catchment runs damp by South Downs standards, so we put a moisture meter over every subfloor before quoting and bring sample boards in oak, walnut and reclaimed pine so the species can be matched to the room before a single board is fixed.
From the brick-and-tile cottages by the Crown to Wealden farm conversions toward Knepp, we lay and restore solid hardwood and parquet across Dial Post and the RH13 lanes.

Read moreOur work in Dial Post is anchored by the RH13 postcode — Brick-and-tile cottages clustered around the Crown on the A24 all sit squarely inside it. Around 50 minutes up from the Bognor Regis workshop — same craftsman every visit, flat-rate quotes by the job not the mile.
Across RH13 the Dial Post brief stays the same: Darren surveys on-site, sample boards stay with you for a fortnight under your own lighting, and the install runs in a single solid stretch rather than back-and-forth day trips. It matters in places like Period stock running south into West Grinstead and east toward Shipley where the subfloors and the building fabric earn a slower pass. Family team since 1997, working across West Sussex from the same coastal base.
Every wood flooring pattern, character finish and construction Darren installs — solid hardwood, engineered oak, herringbone and parquet — laid out edge-to-edge so you can see real grain, real colour, real texture.
Darren will visit, measure up and walk you through species, finishes and lead times. No pressure, no hard sell — just specialist advice.
