Haslemere is the furthest north we run, fifty minutes up from the Bognor Regis workshop into the Surrey hills — and it's one of our favourite stretches to work in. The Georgian core around the High Street, West Street and Lower Street still has its original timber-frame bones, and the housing tilts firmly toward the kind of period stock we live for. We've lifted plenty of original oak block on Three Gates Lane, hand-buffed parquet back to life in the Victorian villas off Lower Bourne, and laid wide-plank oak in the Arts & Crafts properties that ring the town.
Further out toward Grayswood, Hindhead and Tennyson's Lane the work shifts toward bigger jobs in bigger houses — large reception rooms re-laid in herringbone, libraries floored in rich walnut, and kitchen extensions in brushed engineered oak. The drive from the coast is honest, the National Trust country around Black Down and the Devil's Punch Bowl is worth the trip on its own, and the standard never changes — same hand, same patience, same respect for the building you're working in.
Haslemere sits up on the Surrey/Hampshire/West Sussex tri-border, four hundred feet above the sea, and the houses up here have a different rhythm to plan around than the coastal towns. The humidity swing is inland — drier winters, woodburner-heated halls, then green damp summers under the beech canopy — and that brings its own subfloor questions, especially in the older stock.
We always survey the void on Georgian and Edwardian properties around the High Street, Lower Bourne and Grayswood Road before lifting boards, and we lean toward hardwax oil finishes on Arts & Crafts and Victorian work — they age in step with the building and spot-repair cleanly when a fire-iron skitters across the hearth.
For new installs in the bigger Hindhead and Tennyson's Lane houses we lean toward engineered cores — they're stable enough not to need acclimatising — run a moisture-meter pass over every subfloor (underfloor heating included), and where we're laying solid wood we acclimatise the boards on-site first. We bring sample boards in oak, walnut and reclaimed pine so the species can be matched to the room before a single block is cut.
